Square Enix Montéal has announced “Hitman: Sniper”! It’s a free-to-play “massive competitive sniping game”, which will be launching on mobile devices later this year.
Please read the official press release below:
We’re proud to announce Hitman: Sniper, a completely new Hitman game that we’re developing for mobile and tablet devices. Here’s a heads-up of what to expect before we head to E3 and showcase it for the first time.
We’ve designed Hitman: Sniper to be a massively competitive sniping game that will focus on the subtlety of execution. You’ll need to have your wits about you to complete scenario-driven contracts that contain a number of targets and assignments. Each one is designed to have a high level of replayability, not only to fine-tune your approach but to explore creative alternatives and to achieve the ultimate score on the leaderboards. If you remember Hitman: Sniper Challenge, released by our friends at Io-Interactive ahead of the launch of Hitman Absolution, you’ll have a pretty good idea of the sort of action you can expect.
Hitman: Sniper will be launching later this year and will be available free of charge. We want to offer people the opportunity to try the game for free, and then customize their own game experience with optional in-app purchases if they want to. For instance, you can get early access to contracts, or upgrade your sniper rifle – all things you can earn through playing the game. It’s up to you which one you choose and the game won’t force you down a particular route. By making Hitman: Sniper available for free, it will allow more people to have immediate access and increase the level of competition, which is at the core of the game.
Io-Interactive has revealed the first concept art of their upcoming Hitman game! The location in the concept art is set in Central Europe and player will be able to explore the entire building you see in the image, inside and out. In their blog post, Io-Interactive stated that this building on its own is larger than any location in Hitman Absolution.
As every year before E3, rumors about the next Hitman game’s possible appearance at the event have started to spread, but this time, Io-Interactive wanted to stop them to prevent fans experiencing a disappointment.
We know the worst thing is to hope for something that doesn’t turn up; so we wanted to let you know that our next Hitman is going to be under wraps for a bit longer. We’re focusing all of our time and efforts into creating the best possible Hitman game. That’s our number one priority and we don’t want to divert valuable resources to show something before it’s ready.

A few days ago Square Enix’s America and Europe CEO Phil Rogers talked about the new open approach the company is taking in regards to establishing a stronger relationship between the community and the games. When confusion struck the web on what’s next in line for the Hitman franchise, Square Enix immediately clarified this and announced that Io-Interactive is still working on the next Hitman for PC and next gen consoles.
Just a short while ago the Io-Interactive team released an open letter containing the first details on next gen’s Hitman game. It covers a few details about the game’s content and technicalities such as it being built on the backbone of the Glacier 2 engine and the world consisting the largest levels the series has ever seen. You can read the full open letter here.
Io-Interactive will be revealing more information further this year and promises to be in closer contact with the players. Keep your eyes peeled for more Hitman updates in the future.
There has been some confusion yesterday/today about Hitman, in terms of which game is in development and where. Many websites including IGN have been reporting that the next-gen Hitman has been cancelled.
However today, Square Enix sent us an official statement. According to them, we can stop worrying because the next-gen AAA Hitman game is still in development and will be released for next-gen consoles & PC.
“There’s a bit of confusion around the Hitman projects currently in development at Square Enix owned studios and so we wanted to take the time to clarify what each studio is working on to clear up some of this confusion. Io-Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles and Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise. We look forward to sharing more details about these titles later this year.”
