The Road Ahead For Square Enix

2013 was quite a year for Square Enix and its games; we saw some big releases such as the critically acclaimed Tomb Raider reboot and the phenomenal relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

Tomb Raider‘s success was apparent, but for Square Enix the results didn’t meet their expectations. This was a turning point as the company would then see major reforms in its body groups and strategies for future plans.

“When we look at how we take Square Enix forward in this era we have to adopt openness and transparency,” said Square Enix’s America and Europe CEO Phil Rogers as he goes into the new approach and vision the company is working upon. The aim is to establish a stronger connection between the consumers and developers with respect and trust. Rogers says that communications are still in its early stages, but they’re already committing themselves to it. Today an open letter by Io-Interactive regarding the next-gen Hitman was released, and this open approach would hopefully strengthen the relationship between the community and the game. Phil Rogers sees Naoki Yoshida and the FFXIV team as a good example of having created a deep relationship with the players.

Square Enix has also confirmed its aims in the console market having new AAA console games under development for next gen: Tomb Raider, Hitman, and Deus Ex; not to mention the upcoming release of Thief next month on the PC and next gen consoles.

The company’s flagship franchise Final Fantasy is also undergoing a process to strengthen the series’ brand. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn‘s release was the beginning.

Amongst other things such as F2P titles and an indie developer programme, Square Enix has also expressed its goals in investing a lot in the mobile market. “They’re of course not dedicated gaming devices; but I see them as ways to deliver new experiences to grow a new audience or deepen and extend an existing game. We’ve got to be open-minded here.” Phil Rogers clarifies the company’s intent in F2P projects as well, by being open and respectful in handling the skepticisms that the F2P genre often meets.

While having the mindset of forging an honest relationship between the company and the players, Phil Rogers believes that Square Enix will have a more optimistic and a forward-looking future ahead.

“I’m personally proud of the games we have developed in my time with the organisation and in terms of how we’re shaping up, we have some fantastic brands, we have some of the most creatively talented people I’ve ever worked with and we have some of the most passionate consumers. I’m excited about the future.”
