Super Smash Bros. Director Praises Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

According to the report by GameRevolution, Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Super Smash Bros. series, praised Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII on his latest column in Weekly Famitsu.

“Speaking about the battle system itself, Sakurai notes that this latest Lightning-focused game represents the culmination of all the ATB work Square Enix has done over the years. “I was amazed at how, even under the limitations of there being only one party member, the ATB system has evolved,” Sakurai wrote.”

“It’s easy to pick up an already released game and simply enjoy it, but in order to generate entertainment, you need to keep your eyes peeled. I was reminded that if you take what seems natural for granted, nothing will evolve or change for the better.”

-Masahiro Sakurai

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released in North American on February 11th. European fans will get the game three days later on 14th February. The game is released for PS3 and X360.

Thanks for the heads up, @ozmahades!

  1. Yes! Someone in another company likes what Square Enix did! Hope for salvation remains! Lightning, Noctis, do your thing.

  2. I agree when they said the name for this battle system was “amazing atb” cause it really is amazing.
Once you learn to use it, it feels almost like if lightning is dancing and killing at the same time.

  3. I agree completely agree! It seemed as if FF’s gameplay had gotten repetitive, but this completely changes stuff. You have to strategically choose your next move. I find it frustrating when my ATB has drained and I forget to switch it up, but I know that the game will get better and that I will too.

    • The battle system really is something! It becomes very beautiful once you have fully mastered it and start to do epic combos and learn enemies behavior and weaknesses. It’s worth learning! :)
