Hajime Tabata has stated in a new interview with Square Enix Europe that he would like to create a whole new series bound to the Final Fantasy brand. It would be called “the Type Series” which would contain more experimental Final Fantasy titles than in the mainline. He also stated that it would be possible, if Final Fantasy Type-0 HD sells well enough in the West. Square Enix has already registered trademarks for the possible games, so it will be interesting to see how things turn around in the future.
Would you like to see a more experimental spin-off series for Final Fantasy or should the mainline itself remain revolutionary? Perhaps the spin-off series could be testing the waters for mechanics that they want to use in a mainline Final Fantasy game? For example, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII had many features that we will be seeing in Final Fantasy XV but taken to a next level.
The Final Fantasy Type-0 HD and Final Fantasy XV teams are working flat-out to make sure the games come out as soon as humanly possible – but what about the future? Maybe it’s a little soon to be thinking about what’s coming next but apparently not for Tabata-san who has bigger plans if Type-0 HD is successful.
“I would like to make more Type games and make them into a Final Fantasy series. We’ve registered trademarks for it, we’ve gone that far so we want to continue it,” Tabata-san said, giggling slightly. “I’d like to make the Type series the kind of series where we can do the kind of stuff that we really can’t do in the mainline numbered series, so make it a really alternative kind of Final Fantasy.”

Next time, focus on Class Zero instead of Rem and Machina, then my dream come true.
I hope they don’t mess up characterization in future entries. Type-0 was just fine but its characters were pretty much bland.
This holds interesting possibilities. It could be a testing ground not just for experimental gameplay elements, but also for types of story and characters that, under normal circumstances, would not be let within a mile of a mainline game. Yeah, if Type-0 is a success (which seems relatively likely as the west have been waiting for four years and it’s meant to boost console sales in Japan), we might see interesting “types” of development.
And if this does end up being a series, I doubt it will continue to hold onto the Fabula Nova Crystallis framework. To be truly experimental, it would need to discard that. Tabata said a while ago that, if he had the choice, he would dump the mythos in future Type games. Heck, he even forgot to put it into the scenario until quite late. Scenario writers Chiba and Obake had to do it. As to continuing the universe of Type-0, it’s more likely that Tabata or someone else would do that without the “Type” moniker, like with that spin-off/prequel/companion game Agito.
Wasn’t this news years ago? Ever since they changed from Agito Type-0 I thought it was announced that Type-1, Type-2 and etc were planned for the future.
That would be quite interesting – if they do then i wonder if they’ll be related somehow – through story/characters/Mythos etc.
And since he mentioned them being more experimental – then i can see this series being available on various platforms – they might stick to something small like Mobile or the 3DS in the beginning – and if it does well hopefully it’ll move onto consoles – maybe even the Wii U :)
